The Post Graduate Department of Plastic Surgery (PGDPS) at the King George’s Medical University is one of the oldest and foremost teaching departments of Plastic Surgery in this country. It provides teaching, training and research facilities to MBBS, BDS, MS (Gen. Surgery), MS (Orthopedics) and M.Ch. (Plastic Surgery) students and runs Fellowship in Burn & Reconstructive Surgery, Fellowship in Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery, Fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery and Fellowship in Cleft Orthodontics. The department has experienced faculty supported by residents, staff-nurses, physiotherapists and speech therapist.
A significant percentage of in-patient work is related to complicated trauma management, congenital deformity reconstructions, craniofacial reconstructions and microsurgery. The department has particular expertise in a number of areas which is contributed to by sub- specialization amongst consultants and by conduct of various super-specialty multi- disciplinary clinics.
The Department provides comprehensive management of patients presenting with problems related to general Plastic & Reconstructive surgery, Cranio-maxillofacial surgery, Aesthetic surgery, Hand surgery, Microsurgery and Burns.
The department is recognized all over the country for its pioneering work in Craniofacial surgery, Hand surgery and as a Nodal Centre for Leprosy Reconstructive surgery, LASER and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
The Department is a Smile Train (USA) Partner Hospital and thus provides completely free treatment to children afflicted with clefts of the lip and palate. It is also authorized by Smile Train for advanced Orthognathic surgeries.
The department is a recognized regional center for treatment of Craniofacial disorders by the World Craniofacial Foundation (www.worldcf.org) (USA).
The department's contribution to clinical and research work is attested to by the numerous research papers published by its faculty and alumni and by the more than one hundred theses completed and many books chapter written.
The department has a history spanning over fifty years. Plastic Surgery services were started in the year 1953 by Late Prof. R. N. Sharma, who is considered the 'Founder' of this specialty in North India. In 1962, a unit of Plastic Surgery was created. MS in Plastic Surgery was initiated in 1966, one of the first departments in India to do so.

History of Plastic Surgery
Plastic Surgery was started in KGMC in the year 1953, by Late Prof. R N. Sharma, who is
considered the "Founder" of this specialty in North India. In 1962, a unit of Plastic Surgery was
created in the Department of General Surgery. Plastic Surgery course was initiated in 1966, and
was accredited by the Medical Council of India in 1969.
Subsequently, a separate Department of Plastic Surgery was started in 1976. The extension block
of the department was commissioned in 1979. The second floor was formally inaugurated and
commissioned on 22nd December 2003 and currently faculty offices are located on this floor.
Further extension of the department is under way.
The Department provides postgraduate teaching, training and research facilities to MBBS, BDS, MS
and MCh students. It is the only department of its kind in the state of UP. There are four seats
annually for the M.Ch. (Plastic Surgery) course and till date 119 postgraduates have completed
plastic surgery training. Besides general plastic surgery facilities, the department is offering round
the clock emergency services.
The department provides state of the art care in cranio-maxillofacial surgery microsurgery and
hand surgery. The department is a Smile Train (USA) partner since November 2004, which helps
the department to offer free cleft lip and palate surgery to all patients. It is also a partner of The
World Craniofacial Foundation, U.S.A., for the treatment of craniofacial anomalies.
OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at King George Medical University is one of the
largest in North India. It is also one of the oldest centers for teaching, training and patient care in the
specialty in North India. The department has experienced faculty supported by residents, staff,

The Department has got general beds, ICU beds and private beds/rooms within the department
premises. The Department caters to all sub-specialties of Plastic Surgery. It has 5 (four modular and
one non-modular) fully equipped Operation theatres, and a Burn. It has a LASER Suite equipped with
three world class Laser machines, Nd:YAG Laser, Pulse Dye Laser and CO2 Laser, for treatment of
unwanted hair, pigmented lesions, tattoos, Vascular lesions, scars and for treating age related
changes. The department has 09 (nine) (One in each modular operating theatre and 5 in Microsurgery
lab) World Class Carl Zeiss Opmi Vario Operating Microscopes for performing Microsurgery, and for
running the Microsurgery training course. It also has a complete Endoscopic Plastic Surgery system
for performing minimally invasive flap harvest.Department is equipped with world class 3D Printer
Project MJP 2500 which can be used to print medical models for teaching and planning patient's care.
The department has Hyperbaric Unit one single chamber machine and one multi chamber machine.
